Awaiting Approval of COVID Booster Shot

Last week, Denver Health announced, along with many other hospital systems across the country, that we are awaiting the anticipated approval of COVID-19 booster shots for U.S. adults starting in late September. Denver Health plans to offer booster shots to staff and patients as soon as the safety and efficacy data have been reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration and the booster shot is authorized for use. This is expected within the next two to three weeks, although this timeline may change.

At present, no data on the safety and efficacy of the booster shot is publicly available. In the interest of our staff’s safety and in continuing to lead with science, Denver Health has not yet begun offering booster shots to individuals who are not immunocompromised. Most other health care organizations in the area have made the same decision, although we recognize that a minority are currently offering boosters.

We recognize and hear your feedback that you want to be as protected as possible against the spread of the Delta variant and as we move into the fall. Booster shots may ultimately prove to be an important COVID-19 prevention tool, and please know we do plan to offer them once the data and our federal agencies support doing so. In the meantime, staff can protect themselves and families through completion of their initial vaccine series, appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at work and universal indoor masking.

Thank you for your continued vigilance for the safety of our staff and patients.
