Denver County is entering another COVID-19 surge, with a predominance of the Delta variant. This surge has been different than the previous ones in that we are seeing outpatients diagnosed with COVID-19 yet our inpatient COVID-19 census remains low. Vaccination is the major reason why many who contract COVID-19 are not severely ill. Vaccination decreases an individual’s chances of developing a symptomatic infection with the Delta variant of COVID-19 by about 70-90%. It also decreases the chances that the illness will be severe or require hospitalization. Please get your vaccine promptly so that you can be protected from COVID-19 infection. Vaccination can be scheduled through our online portal.

Last week, the CDC recommended mask use for all individuals when indoors, regardless of vaccination status, for communities that have substantial or high COVID-19 case rates. Denver Health has evaluated this recommendation and has chosen not to alter our current masking policy at this time. A number of factors weigh into this decision such as the high vaccination rate among our staff, the low number of hospitalized patients, the local rates of COVID-19 infection, and the severity of illness associated with circulating variants. We will continually evaluate the situation and will update you if the circumstances change. As a reminder, unvaccinated employees must wear a mask at all times in the workplace. Vaccinated employees must wear a mask in areas where patients, clients, or visitors are encountered; they are not required to wear a mask in non-clinical areas but are welcome to wear one if they so choose.

Employees can continue to access free COVID-19 testing through the REDCap Survey. We require employees to stay home and be tested if they develop symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, or loss of taste or smell. We encourage employees to be tested 5-7 days after an exposure to someone who has COVID-19.

Many providers have asked about COVID-19 resources including treatment guidelines, vaccination details, and visitor policies. Treatment guidelines are located on PolicyStat and on our Antimicrobial Stewardship smartphone application. Vaccine information for clinicians and patients is available on the Pulse subsite. To get vaccinated, visit our online portal to schedule a vaccine. Visitor policies and other COVID-19-specific policies are available in PolicyStat.

Thank you for your continued dedication to Denver Health and our patients.
